AI For Set Design?

Artificial intelligence (AI) has quickly emerged as a transformative force in creative fields, which is starting to include set design. While some herald AI as a game-changing tool for efficiency and creativity, others fear it may erode the essence of human artistry and threaten livelihoods. In this article, we explore the multifaceted impact of AI on set design, addressing the concerns of professionals while also examining its potential and future trajectory.

Important note: This is not a pro " AI should replace humans " post. Rather, I'll try to talk openly about the concerns that artists have, while proposing some ways it can be used to augment human creativity to help speed up your workflow, or help discover new ideas.

1. Concerns Among Set Designers

Job Security

For many set designers, the rise of AI brings an existential question: Will it take my job? Automation has already impacted industries like manufacturing, and similar concerns are now voiced in the arts. AI tools can draft, visualize, and even generate intricate designs faster than ever, potentially reducing the demand for human designers in certain roles.

Loss of Originality

Another significant worry is the potential loss of originality. AI, by design, learns from existing works to generate new ones. Critics argue that this could lead to derivative creations that lack the emotional depth and innovation found in human-designed sets. Can an algorithm truly interpret the nuances of a director’s vision or evoke the desired emotional response from an audience? Is Ai smart enough to visualize the choreography of a musical and design a set ready to support the weight of someone tap dancing on a faux piano? (not yet anyway)

Safety Issues

Speaking of tap dancing on a piano...are we ready to rely on AI to design a structure that will be artistically sound, functional and more importantly..... structurally SAFE? We've all seen some of the garbage images that AI is producing today. I certainly wouldn't trust it to design a structure and I'm putting a cast and crew on.

Intellectual Property Issues

AI models are often trained on massive datasets, which (depending on the source) may include copyrighted works. This has raised ethical questions about ownership. If an AI-generated design resembles a famous set piece, who is responsible? Designers fear their work could be used to train systems that ultimately replace them. For what it's worth, companies like Adobe are trying to ensure that their training is done ethically, with the ability for the artist to opt in or out, and even get compensated.

Over-Reliance on AI

There’s also a danger of creatives becoming overly reliant on AI, prioritizing convenience over craft. The risk is that set design becomes more about tweaking algorithmic outputs than about original artistic expression.

2. What AI Brings to the Table for Set Design

We don't get anywhere by horse anymore. Cars took over and here we are. If the same is to be said for AI, I think it's important to look at what AI IS good at.

Streamlined Workflows

AI excels at handling repetitive and time-consuming tasks. For example, AI tools can automatically generate realistic textures, calculate lighting effects, or scale designs to different dimensions. This can save countless hours, allowing designers to focus on the creative aspects of their work. I can't tell you how awesome it's been to upload the manual of a lighting board into GPT and then ask it questions to help me fix my patch issues. Life saver!

Cost Efficiency

School theaters, community productions, and smaller companies often operate on tight budgets. AI-powered design tools can lower costs by reducing the time needed for manual labor and by offering affordable visualization options. This one has to be handled carefully. With students, we have to balance learning the craft manually VS using the tools of the day to be competitive in the real world.

Enhanced Creativity

Far from stifling creativity, AI can act as a powerful brainstorming partner. Tools like generative design platforms can produce countless variations of a concept, sparking ideas that might not have emerged otherwise. Designers can then refine these ideas to suit the production’s specific needs. I recently played around with this idea by uploading a picture of my design stairwell for a set and asking the AI to generate different versions from various time periods for me.

Concerting Your Sketch To A Rendering

Advanced AI rendering tools can create hyper-realistic visualizations, helping directors, designers, and producers see exactly how a set will look before it’s built. This capability is particularly useful if you don't have 3D rendering skills. You can upload a picture of your sketch and ask the AI to render it in a more realistic style. It's still your design, you're just using the AI as a part of the process.

3. Speeding Up Your Workflow

Many set designers are already incorporating AI into their workflows with promising results. Below are some ways designers are using it to speed up their workflow (not do the work for them):

Rapid Prototyping:

Some designers use AI to create quick drafts of set layouts, which can then be refined manually. This allows them to experiment with multiple ideas in a fraction of the time.

Hybrid Workflows:

AI-generated designs are often just the starting point. Designers bring their expertise to refine these concepts, adding the human touch that AI cannot replicate.

Textures and Styles:

In my case, I use AI to generate textures for my 3D workflow. If I need a yellow brick road, I can either have AI add it to my final render, or I can have it create the yellow brick image that I can tile over some 3D geometry.

However, AI is not without its limitations. For example, it can struggle with abstract themes or fail to build cohesive narratives without human intervention. These challenges underscore the importance of collaboration between humans and machines.

4. The Balancing Act: Embracing AI While Preserving Artistry

Skill Adaptation:

To thrive in an AI-influenced industry, set designers may need to adapt their skill sets. Learning to use AI tools effectively is becoming as essential as mastering traditional design techniques.

Ethical Advocacy:

Designers must advocate for ethical AI practices , such as ensuring fair compensation for artists whose works are used to train AI models. Supporting transparency in AI development is crucial for protecting intellectual property rights.

Human Creativity as the Core:

Ultimately, the success of AI in set design depends on how it’s used. When AI serves as a tool rather than a replacement, it can enhance human creativity rather than overshadow it. Designers must ensure that their unique vision remains at the heart of every project.

5. The Future of AI In Set Design

What does the future hold for AI in set design? It’s likely that we’ll see even more sophisticated tools capable of handling complex tasks, from animating moving set pieces to simulating audience sightlines in real-time. At the same time, AI’s growing influence raises questions about the role of human designers:

Will AI democratize set design, making high-quality tools accessible to smaller productions?
Could it unintentionally marginalize niche artistry in favor of efficiency?

The answers to these questions may very well shape the future of the industry. As we move forward, it’s up to designers, producers, and technologists to navigate these challenges together.

While I don't think this works for that production, it does give me some interesting ideas for other things.

In Conclusion...

AI is undoubtedly changing the landscape of all forms of design be it theatre sets, architecture or something like websites. While it brings exciting possibilities, it also raises valid concerns about job security, originality, and ethics. By embracing AI as a tool—not a replacement—designers can unlock new levels of creativity and efficiency. As the industry evolves, open dialogue and thoughtful adoption of technology will be key to ensuring a vibrant future for set design.

For fun, there are some of my experiments with a few well-known scripts. As you can see, simply asking for a set design doesn't cut it. I'll also note, that each of the "better" prompts took MANY attempts to get something even close. That said, I saw a lot of great images that we're excellent inspiration that I would be able to take and craft into my finished works.

This one has been posted in the Facebook Group a few times and it's one of my absolute favorite gems!

If you've ever built a set with working doors, you know the frustration of dealing with doors that won't stay put. Whether they swing open at the wrong moment or stubbornly refuse to stay closed, rogue doors can disrupt the flow of a scene and pull the audience out of the moment. Given that stage floors and sets are rarely perfectly level, this is a common problem. But fear not—I've recently come across a simple yet ingenious solution involving something you probably have lying around: an old paintbrush .

The Paintbrush Solution: A Clever and Practical Tip

So, here’s the trick: repurpose an old paintbrush to help keep those tricky doors in place. It’s straightforward and incredibly effective. Here’s how you do it:

Find an old paintbrush and look for the hole in the handle. Now, on the bottom of your door—on the upstage side where the audience can't see it—screw the paintbrush upside down using that hole in the handle. The bristles should touch the stage floor just enough to create a gentle drag.

Of course the beauty of this hack lies in its simplicity. The bristles of the paintbrush drag gently on the stage floor, creating just enough friction to keep the door steady. When you open the door, it stays exactly where you put it. No more doors swinging open at the wrong time or stubbornly refusing to stay closed and none of those expensive hinges. The resistance provided by the bristles is just right for holding the door in place without making it hard to open or close.

Why does this method work so well? For one, it’s incredibly simple. You don’t need any fancy tools or expensive gadgets—just an old paintbrush and a screw. Plus, it’s a great way to repurpose something that might otherwise end up in the trash.

This trick is also cost-effective. Theater budgets are often tight, and finding low-cost solutions is always a win. By using materials you already have, you can solve a common problem without spending a dime.

And let’s not forget, it’s unobtrusive. Since the paintbrush is mounted on the upstage side of the door, it stays out of sight from the audience and out of your actor's way. The visual integrity of your set remains intact, and the audience is none the wiser.

Versatility and Adaptability

One of the great things about this trick is its versatility. You can use it on various types of doors, and you can adjust the amount of friction by trimming the bristles. Whether you need just a little resistance or a bit more to keep a heavier door in place, this method is easily adaptable.

Let your imagination run wild as you transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, crafting a space where laughter reigns supreme and every corner holds a comedic surprise.

Present Day | Retail Employee Lounge | Acentric Decor | Farse |

In the midst of the daily grind at the bustling retail store, rumors begin to swirl that the store's eccentric owner, Mr. Whimsy, has decided to sell the business to a mega-corporation known for its soulless approach to retail.

As the news spreads like wildfire among the employees, panic ensues in the employee lounge. The ever-optimistic Riley "The Rookie" Rivers proposes a plan to save the store by staging a grand protest in the employee lounge, complete with picket signs, chants, and a marching band made up of makeshift instruments.

Filled with slapstick humor, witty banter, and unexpected twists and turns, "Employee Lounge Lunacy: Retail Ruckus" is a riotous comedy that celebrates the power of teamwork, friendship, and laughter in the face of adversity.

Your Extra Element:

The lounge should include at least one unconventional, and funny, way of entering and exiting. It could be a laundry shoot, a window (perhaps the door is broken and everyone just uses the window), etc. It needs to be strange, but justified enough to get away with it for comedy sake. It should be used at least once during the show.

Riley "The Rookie" Rivers:
A wide-eyed and eager new employee who stumbles into the chaotic world of retail, Riley is constantly befuddled by the absurdities of the employee lounge and the antics of their coworkers.

You're encouraged to build a set that gives your imaginary director lots of options for both group and separate side conversations among the crew.

Your Extra Element:

Your extra challenge is to create a dramatic destruction sequence for the spaceship to be performed live on stage. Whether it's through creative use of props, special effects, or innovative stagecraft, let your design bring the destruction of the spaceship to life in a thrilling and visually stunning manner.

Captain Aiden Storm:
A fearless leader with a heart of gold, Captain Storm commands respect and loyalty from his crew as they navigate the dangers of the jungle. His unwavering determination and quick thinking make him a natural leader in the face of adversity.

In the world of theater set design, the stage is our canvas, and every element placed upon it contributes to the narrative unfolding before the audience's eyes. As set designers, we wield immense creative power, tasked not only with crafting visually stunning environments but also with enhancing the storytelling experience. However, with this power comes a crucial responsibility: to build with purpose.

It's a common temptation for directors, producers, and even designers themselves to succumb to the allure of adding "cool" elements to a set. Whether it's an extravagant backdrop, intricate props, or flashy special effects, the desire to dazzle and impress can sometimes overshadow the primary objective: serving the story.

In our pursuit of creating memorable and impactful set designs, we must never lose sight of the fundamental principle that every element on stage should have a clear and compelling reason for being there. This principle is not about advocating for a minimalist approach, where less is always more, but rather about prioritizing substance over spectacle for spectacle-sake.

Case Study: The Quaint Café Scene

Consider a scene set in a quaint café. The temptation might arise to adorn the set with an array of ornate decorations, intricate furniture, and bustling extras to create a vibrant and bustling atmosphere. However, if these elements do not directly contribute to the narrative or serve the characters' objectives, they risk becoming distracting embellishments rather than meaningful additions. Additionally, they significantly add to the budget, timeline or risk taking budget and time away from other, perhaps more critical elements.

Asking the Right Questions: Purposeful Decision-Making

Instead, we must approach set design with a discerning eye, constantly questioning the purpose behind each decision. Does the placement of a particular prop enhance the emotional intensity of a scene? Does the layout of the set facilitate smooth transitions between locations, allowing the story to flow seamlessly? Does the lighting design evoke the desired mood, amplifying the tension or amplifying the joy of a pivotal moment?

By asking these critical questions and remaining steadfast in our commitment to building with purpose, we elevate our craft from mere decoration to storytelling artistry. Every detail, from the smallest prop to the grandest backdrop, becomes a deliberate brushstroke in the masterpiece that is live theater.

The Journey from Script to Stage: My Theater Set Design Process

Introduction: Navigating the Creative Path

For those of you who are new to the process, I thought I would share a behind-the-scenes walkthrough of my set design process. As a set designer, my role is to transform the words of a script into a practical, useable, clear representation of place and time. In this exploration, I'll take you through my step-by-step process, from the initial script analysis to the creation of detailed blueprints. Join me as we delve into the artistry, collaboration, and meticulous attention to detail that bring theatrical worlds to life.

1. Script Analysis: Defining the Essentials

When I embark on a new theater set design project, my first step is always to read the script. Truth be told, I SKIM it on the first real, then I carefully read through every line, noting down the essential elements that are integral to telling the story. Entrances, exits, key props, and any specific spatial requirements all make it onto my list of must-haves. These are the building blocks around which the entire set will be crafted, so getting them right is paramount. I want this list to be as short as possible. What is essential to serving the action?

2. Sketching Ideas: From Paper to Possibilities

With my list in hand, I begin the creative process by sketching out rough ideas on paper. It's a fluid and exploratory stage where anything is possible. Ideas flow freely as I let my imagination take the lead. There is typically a point where I start getting carried away and running out of drawing skills, where I realize it's time to dive into 3D.

3. Transition to 3D: Bringing Concepts to Life

Eventually, the sketches reach a level of detail that demands a more tangible form. That's when I turn to Blender, a powerful (and free) 3D modeling software. In Blender, I bring my sketches to life, translating them into three-dimensional concepts. At this stage, I'm just trying to make it look "good enough" to sell the idea. I'm not going for and intense level of detail, unless I happen to get in the zone and get completely carried away (which happens from time to time).

4. Concept Presentation: Collaboration with the Director

Typically, I develop two or three distinct designs to present to the director. In our meeting, we discuss each concept, weighing their merits and considering how they align with the vision of the production. I will usually have my preferred approach, and then two others that I try to make as different as is reasonable. One easy way to play it would be 3 different budgets. The cheap way, the pretty good way, the bank breaking insanity. It's important to be open and tell our director clearly, "I have no emotional investment, please be blunt and honest, anything can change."

As a final step in the concept, I often meet with the lead builder to make sure we haven't designed something they can't build, feel is unsafe etc. You want their buy-in BEFORE the big set presentation.

5. Refinement and Detailing: Perfecting the Vision

Once a concept is chosen, I dive back into Blender to refine and perfect the model. Oftentimes, I start from scratch to make sure it's pixel-perfect, since the concept was likely done quite quickly and with minimal attention to perfect scale etc.

This phase involves fine-tuning every aspect, from the overall scale to the smallest details. Textures are added, lighting is adjusted – all with the aim of creating a visually stunning representation of the set.

6. Rendering and Sharing: Bringing Designs to Life

With the model complete, I render out high-quality images from a couple angles, top views etc., to share with the rest of the production team. At the production meeting, the set designs take center stage as we gather to discuss the vision for the show. This is your moment to show off and wow them. Everyone will be blown away and the more excitement you generate, the more invested everyone is about their contributions.

7. Blueprint Creation: Guiding the Construction

Finally, I export the 3D model into Rhino 3D or SketchUp to create my blueprints. These blueprints serve as a guide for the construction team, ensuring that every element of the set is clear. Remember: they already know how to build things. You don't need to tell them how to build it, you just need to clearly communicate what, where, how big, and how it will be used. Does the faux piano need to be tap-danced on? This note should be in your drawing!

The best thing you can do of course is to partner closely with your lighting designer. The incorporation of practical lights should be a collaborative process, with both creatives agreeing on the right mix.

Black Art: Which Material?

Do I Need "Black 2.0" To Make Something Invisible On Stage?

This post is an excerpt from my book " Hiding In The Shadows: Black Art For The Stage ".

When you start to plan out your use of the color black to hide things on stage, one of the first decisions you’re going to have to make is what material to use. While you could just pick up any old cheap fabric at the store and do just fine with good lighting, I’d like to take you through some of the other options you have available to you.

That said, before I get into it, I want to be super clear: The lighting setup you use is more important than the material. I've helped magicians and productions make everything from people, to a massive Cinderella coach appear with Black Art. You'd be surprised how far a knowledgeable effects person can get with cheap black fabric, duct tape and a couple lights on the floor.

And before a nervous magician emails me.....no, you don't have to tape the doors and exit signs. I've seen entire cars and sets appear in theatres with the house lights on!

Painted Hard Surfaces Look Like Painted Hard Surfaces

One thing to be careful with is solid materials which have been painted. A prop painted black works fine as long as you know that it’s not going to appear to be perfectly flat black under the lights. Painted wood always looks like painted wood and your black is actually more of a grey, especially up against the dead black backdrop. This is fine for the underside of a table that isn't facing the audience, but a piece of painted plywood won’t hide anything. Go with fabric.

I actually worked on a theatre production years ago where the set team had painted the top of one extra tall section of the wall black in hopes that it would disappear against the backdrop. What they ended up with was one theatre flat with a grey top, which looked very out of place.

Better Black Art Material Choices

The first thing you need to consider is what the black area will be up against. If it’s meant to blend in with the backdrop in a theatre, then the best course of action is to use the same material. Don’t waste time looking for the blackest material on the market when it really should match what it’s up against. Typically, theatres use a heavy velvet drape called Triple Velvet. You can get your hands on it from any theatrical supply company or lighter versions at your local fabric shop so long as it’s not too reflective. Another good tactic is to look around for theatres getting rid of old drapery. I recently picked up a full-size scrim for free for a set because it was just sitting around in a theatres storage with holes in it. Ask around, check the local giveaway websites and see if you can score yourself some used theatre drapery that you can modify to your liking.

Generally speaking, how "black" the material is matters more the larger that thing is. It's easy to hide something small, since there is less surface area to catch the light.

If the black area is located on a prop and is not meant to look like the backdrop (like the underside of a table or the inside of a box), you’ve got many good options available to you. Black auto carpet is very among illusion builders because it's easy to apply and can take a good beating. Black felt also works well although I would not put it on a surface that’s meant to be stood on as it can wear down quite quickly under those circumstances. It is, however, great for sitting in those little shadow areas like the gap between two objects. A faux black fur can also be used and does a nice job of hiding seams in trap doors as the hairs in the fur cover everything.

In a future post, I'll touch on some lighting concepts for Black Art. It's an extremely useful skill to have. Any time you need to make something appear, vanish or change, Black Art can be an incredibly useful technique.

As characters navigate the intricacies of love against a backdrop of lavish interiors, the stage becomes a canvas for the timeless elegance of an era where every whispered secret adds another layer to the unfolding drama.

The play is set in England, amidst the splendor of Victorian society and the aristocratic lifestyle of the time. The grand mansion is a reflection of the wealth and sophistication prevalent in 19th-century England. The play is set in the year 1885, during the height of the Victorian era.

About The Hidden Intrigue:

Lady Victoria hides a forbidden love, defying Victorian norms. Your challenge is to subtly incorporate a visual element that reveals the secret. This can be subtly revealed to the audience incrementally, or at the end - your call.

Characters:

Lady Victoria Harrington:
A poised and sophisticated aristocrat, Lady Victoria is the epitome of Victorian grace. Concealing a longing heart, she navigates the societal expectations of her time with a facade of elegance.
Sir Reginald Hastings:
Sir Reginald, a distinguished gentleman, is caught between duty and desire. His honorable demeanor belies a forbidden passion that threatens to unravel the carefully woven threads of societal norms.
Miss Arabella Thornton:
A vivacious and free-spirited young woman, Miss Arabella introduces an element of unpredictability to the story. Her presence challenges the constraints of the Victorian world, adding intrigue and mystery.
Lord Archibald Montague:
Lord Archibald, a charming aristocrat with a mysterious past, weaves his way through the narrative. His charismatic presence casts shadows on the unfolding drama, leaving the audience questioning his true intentions.

Requirements:

Basic Requirements: Must include a grand staircase, vintage furniture, and an element representing a hidden secret.
Make-Believe Budget: $50,000
Setting Details: Victorian mansion, in 1885 England. Evening time with a touch of mystery.
Submission Guidelines: 3D renderings, sketches, models, or whatever you like! It should be accompanied by a brief description of design choices, no more than 75 words.
Judging Criteria: Creativity, practical use, integration of the hidden element, and overall visual impact. It must serve the story.
