Open your inbox and continue conversations with other makers.
Messages are conversations with other makers. Listing questions about a Marketplace item use Contact Seller instead, which keeps the thread on that listing. See Browse the Marketplace and contact a seller.
Open Messages from the site header envelope, or from the dashboard Community section.
Messages is in the site header and the dashboard Community section.
Open a conversation from the inbox. If nobody has written yet, the inbox stays empty until someone does.
The inbox lists conversations, or shows an empty state until the first one arrives.
Read the thread and reply from that conversation. New messages also show a badge on the header envelope.

Start a new conversation from a maker profile when that profile allows messages. Listing questions about a Marketplace item still use Contact Seller, not this inbox.
